+ GCF files are quite complex and while enough is known about them to be able to extract them there is not + enough known to be able to modify them. This would probably require some documentation from Valve.

i was killing + some time today and i came across something that might peak your interest. I ran AnalogX's + TextScan on steam.exe and among the long stream of nothingness that came out was a version number + and copyright info ( here it is: deflate 1.1.4 Copyright 1995-2002 Jean-loup Gailly ). wondering what + steam was doing with non-valve software i did a quick google search and + this page poped up. interestingly, from what i gather zlib is a data compression library. While i + neither have the time or the expertise to flush out its connection to steam, i was hopeing that it might + become useful to your research on the .gcf format. good luck and keep up the great work nem.

+ Currently the hl2 "base source shared materials.gcf"is not being opened and comming up with an error for + some people. (failed to map error)

+ A lot of people seem to think GCFScape can somehow be used to crack Half-Life 2 so let me clear up these + misconceptions. First off, Half-Life 2 preloads (and any other games you have not paid for or have not + been released) and in encrypted form. To confirm this right click on a file and select its properties + and GCFScape will happily tell you whether or not it is encrypted. GCFScape will extract these encrypted + files, but they will be of no use to you. Secondly the Half-Life 2 preload does not contain all + Half-Life 2 files, just bulky things like media, models and levels.

+ GCFScape was designed to allow legitimate developers to access files they need to develop with, nothing + more.

+ in addition, the only use of GCF files is to distrubute the media over Steam. Seeing as MOD devolpers + can not yet distribute stuff on Steam, it is pointless.

+ And anyways, I do think that Steam supports PAK files, so you can use those insted.

You can open .gcf files when Steam is running, just enable the "Volatile + Access" option from within the Options menu in GCFScape. The reason I don't use the Steam SDK is 1) + the Steam SDK wasn't out when I first wrote the program, 2) the Steam file system interface isn't very + flexible and 3) it adds additional dependencies; I hate having to install things to certain folders. +

I've double-checked the installer and it seems fine, perhaps there is an + incompatibility problem with your system? Anyways, you don't need the installer to install GCFScape, + there is also an "archive" (zip) distribution available, just unzip and run. The only + difference is that it doesn't create shortcuts etc.

if + you want to convert a .bsp-file into a .vmf file take a look at VMEX. + It requires Java, but it doesn't extract any custom models and other custom staff (use GCFScape + instead).

While I don't really recommend texturing Source terrains in TG, you can if you + convert your .vtf files to .tga files then load the folder containing the .tga files in TG. This will + allow TG to generate alphas as you paint the terrain which will be exported by TG. When you import your + terrain into Hammer and apply a texture to it, the alphas should behave appropriately as long as the + texturing scheme is one that the Source engine supports (e.g. three textures should never meet at one + vertex).

This error occurs when HLLib calculates that the .gcf file is not of sufficient size + to hold all of the data that the header claims it does. In other words, your .gcf file may be truncated + or otherwise corrupt. A quick check would be to look at its size. My counter-strike.gcf file is 265.11 + MB, how big is yours?
+
+ If you believe this to be false and your .gcf file to be valid, please send it to me so I can take a + closer look at it. It may be that I've fudged up the format somewhere.

Howdy there guys, I have a huge problem and I had this for a long period but cant + find any answers. Here is the deal, Im playing counter-strike but get this "Your map differs from + the server". I can play the map but not after a steam restart. And everytime is diferent map that + gets screwed, sometimes its dust2 and another time its inferno and nuke. Here is the list of what I have + tryed to do about the problem:

+ - Reinstaling steam
+ - Reinstaling the whole PC
+ - Removed and redownloaded the GCF
+ - Defraged the GCF cach
+ - Got a new harddrive
+
+ And non of this have helped me. I have tryed to search for an answer around the internet but I only cant + find one stuppid answer "Remove the map and download" But how the hell can I remove a file + thats inside the GCF! So at the moment Im screwed and there is no one that know the right think to do. I + would be really happy if any of you guys could help me. thanks alot

Sorry man, but I can't help you (wouldn't know where to start). All I + can say is that you can't remove files from within a GCF file (see the FAQ for a more in depth answer). + You should contact + Valve for more help.

+ The error message means that your GCF file has been truncated somewhere after the header (i.e. the end + of the file is missing). Try deleting the GCF file, Steam should redownload it.

Hi, starting from (i think) 1.51 gcfscape cant seem to read pak files + correctly.

Instead of showing folders with files in it, it shows the file with the folder as + part of the filename.

I cant extract files becuase "/" isnt allowed in the filename + for windows and it confuses windows because of that.

I've checked it against my old half-life + paks and homemade paks made through pakscape and neither work.

Not sure where this crept in, but it's a small typo in HLLib's path construction. + I've fixed it and the fix will be in v1.6.0 which I will be releasing in the next few days.

Well, first of all, make sure that they are fully downloaded and updated. You can + check that by running Steam and looking in the 'My Games' tab. You can also go in to the game's + properties and in the 'Local Files' tab you can verify their integrity.
+
+ There are also (last time I checked) a handful of files in some of the GCF files that don't actually + exist. These are normal. For example, files for the 64-bit version aren't downloaded on 32-bit systems. +

exhausted When Trying to Open a .WAD i made from BMPtoWAD program BAT it doesint + add all my bmp's i did not make any of the pics i got them from exstracting them from HL1 CS wad files + Becouse while making a map i get a error telling me i am using to many wads for my map so i want to add + all the pics together in one mass WAD. Invalid File: the file's signature does not match. means that the file's + internal signature is not WAD3 (which is the only type of .wad file GCFScape supports).

If you're not getting .NET exceptions (there + should be a Details button on the error message if you are) then it is .NET that is crashing, not + my application. You may want to check your .NET installation, and your system for other possible errors + (such as bad memory).

just pre loaded tf2, and it's accessible with GCFscape (thought it would be encrypted + or something). VTF EDit cant open the textures, and i couldnt get hammer to open a decompiled maps, but + you can still see the scripts and sounds (idk about models).

I'm not sure why this occurs, but it seems to be pretty common place for .gcf files + to be missing a few files (my .gcf files are missing the above files). I can only speculate that the + files were originally part of the .gcf when it was first constructed, but later removed when it was + found that they were unnecessary. For example, maplist.txt is only needed for MODs, and + sheckley_cover12.wav may have never been used.
+
+ GCFScape displays the above error when processing these files because it cannot tell them apart for + ordinary unacquired files. I believe these errors are safe to ignore.
+

Hi,

got some serious problem with this program:
I'm runing winXp SP2 + and i've already installed the Dot-Net-Framework using the link provided. [so i got dotnetV2.0]
But + whenever i try to start GCFscape 1.6.7 an error is displayed that this software couldnt be started and + needs to be reinstalled to work... however i deinstalled and reinstalled everything 3times by now + (dotnet and gcfscape) but no change.

I found error in latest release of GCFScape (1.6.9).
+ The value 'Size on Disk' in gcf file properties dialog and status bar is negative for file 'team + fortress 2 content.gcf'. This probably because real size of this file is more than 2GiB, and you store + this value in signed variable. This error affects defragmenting: defrag info doesn't appear in progress + dialog, but after some time defragmenting ends and file successfully defragments without corruption. + (It's good idea to store all big values in QWORD vars, or in pair of DWORDs =)

I tried to use unsigned integers in HLLib and GCFScape whenever possible, but it + seems there are a handful of places where I neglected to. I've fixed these places and will be releasing + an update tomorrow.

+ I don't think we need to worry about anything bigger than 4 GB because the internal GCF data structure + uses 32 bit unsigned integers for offsets etc.

I've tried GCFScape on all my Vista boxes and I can't seem to reproduce this. + GCFScape just uses the standard Windows API file IO functions to extract files. I have no idea how + GCFScape could be directly responsible for the experience you have described.

Could you please add support for the silent hill:homecoming .pak files? They are not + the same as the regular .pak files. I think there encrypted somehow. I have been looking everywhere for + an extraction program that can read them but so far nothing.I want to see what model format the game + uses so I can convert some to use in gmod! Batch validation would be good addition to GCFScape. I needed this feature two days + ago when some antivirus after buggy update corrupted my hard disk file system entries. chkdsk is good + tool, but GCF validation may be better for GCF files (or to completely calm me down =).

+ Hello, I'm having the exact same problem as the one mentioned above, except I'm using Vista Home + Premium. The extract doesn't seem to extract anything and Vista doesn't recognize that the folder was + created.
+
+ However, I seem to have found out the reason why this occurs, though I'm not sure exactly why this would + do anything. It appears to be related to the Make New Folder command when attempting to extract files. + If a new folder is created using GCFScape, Vista cannot recognize it. But if the files were extracted to + an existing folder, then there is no problem.
+
+ Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a way to get around this, and I'm having trouble deleting the + files created because Vista cannot see the files. Perhaps I will try Windows Recovery in Command Prompt. +

You won't find the files you want in the NCF. You may find the files in the + corresponding game's folder located at c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\plantvszombies\ provided + you actually own the game.

Thanks for the great tool! I'm using it to help speed up the loading times with + Portal 2, half-life2, and half-life2 with the gigantic (yet gorgeously awesome) Cinematic Mod 11.

+ I first use Ultimate Defrag to sort my games folder alphabetically and to put it on the outer edge of my + hard drive's platters. I then use your program to optimize the .gcf files and to sort the files within + the .gcf files alphabetically as well (lexicographically as you call it ;))
+
+ My next step will be to upgrade my SSD so it is large enough to fit all my games on it, then I don't + have to think about I/O bottlenecks ever again!

It seems that HPE/Valve have made the CS:GO VPKs unreadable by + GCFScape since 14th September patch (only the root directory is listed).

As you can imagine, + this makes modifying certain aspects of the game more or less impossible. Is there any chance you could + cook up a patch for this please? Or would it be wiser to wait for Valve to undo whatever changes they + made? The last item here is + the only VPK related change they disclosed.

I seems as though Valve isn't serving up all the contents of that file anymore. Is + what you're looking for in source 2007 shared materials.gcf?

+ yes its in the shared materials but i dont know why it isnt in that folder, i even tried deleting the + broken file then downloading it again.
+ also when i browse my files normally (not through gcfscape)

There is a really f*cking rage inducing error that I have tried everything to fix. + I've tried verifying TF2's files, Re-installing GCFScape and practically everything I could do. This is + the error I get every time I go to extract a file from team fortress 2 materials:

I can confirm that all files within "team fortress 2 content.gcf" and + "team fortress 2 materials.gcf" are greyed-out and can't be extracted. I didn't check any + other gcf files though.

There's may a dozen files in all that can be extracted. The rest + gives the error above.

If you want to extract the model files and + getting the error above then instead open the following file, it will work:

[DRIVE & + PATH]\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\tf2_misc_dir.vpk

+ From there browse the directories until you find "/models/weapons/" and chose the appropriate + directory thereafter (or just browse around until you find the one you're specifically looking + for.
+
+ Hopefully that'll fix your problem. :)

+ Your Steam folder is fine; you might try 'Steam\GCFScape' though because GCFScape will create some files + and folders when you run it. To uninstall it just delete whatever folder you put GCFScape into.
+
+ GCFScape is not designed to fix any problems you might be having, using GCFScape however might be useful + for fixing problems if it were demmed necessary to access and modify files within your GCF file.

+ Okay, at first glance it looks like the section called the 'Block Entry Usage Map' no longer has any + data associated with it, just an empty header. I never liked this section and wondered why it was there + in the first place as it just complicated things.

+ Yesterday (June 21st), I used GCFScape to extract a few files that I needed from the "condition + zero.gcf". Everything went fine, I got the files that I wanted and so on. But this morning, I + opened up Steam, talked to a friends and then closed it. I fired up GCFScape to extract some more files + that I needed, and when I opened the "condition zero.gcf", the program just froze and sat + there. So I closed it manually by ending its process, and when I tried opening it again, it froze some + more. It does the same thing with all the other *.gcf files. Any idea why?

OK, I've added support for version 3 GCF files. I found exactly two changes + between version 3 and version 5 so I'm going to try and download some more GCF files to see if I can see + which one of those changes was made in version 4 before I upload the new GCFScape.

I've also + improved the error messages so they all don't suggest you close Steam even when the error has nothing to + do with Steam. Along with that I've added a version panel to the status bar.

+ Simply saying "it doesn't work" doesn't help me at all. GCFScape will spit out an error + message if it encounters a problem; that error message helps me. Also, GCFScape will create a file + called dump.txt in its directory or the directory of your GCF file if it encounters a problem; that file + helps me a lot.

+ I have a lot of programs with a lot of execution permutations and I can't predict every problem they + will encounter, but I think you'll find if you take the time to help me out instead of complaining, + you'll get a fix as fast as possible.

+ well, if you are a new Steam user, you have to make a Steam User Account and put in either your HL, CS, + or DOD retail CD key.
+
+ if you don't have a CD key, go to your local game store and by a $20 copy of Half-Life (or CS or DOD) + and use that CD key.
+
+ that will give you access to all of the ganes currently available on Steam except CS:CZ.

+ When I try to open the GCF I get a memory mapping error, even though Steam is closed. Also, the preload + was only materials, and nothing else. The full game will preload tomorrow morning.

+ The Half-Life 2 Pre-Load is just that...
+ Valve are releasing content in Steps, mainly to cut down on server down time.
+
+ What you have (which 1.1.5 will open btw) is purely the materials for Half-Life 2.
+ So for the adverage person this is going to be a waste of time, however if your like myself and have a + copy of Worldcraft 3.5 which supports the new Source Material System it means you can extract it, put + the files you need in the root folder (bin) and run for complete access to everything you need to + finally create maps.
+
+ If you also have Counter Strike Source, you'll also have the materials required in order to use the 'not + legally' released Binaries floating about the internet.
+
+ Although not really legit to do, you won't be able to pirate the game even if you wanted to and had the + executables.
+ Alot of the GCF are given to you missing files, they're declared in the GCF and so is thier space, + however the file itself isn't downloaded until you've ordered the game.

The problem Failed to map GCF file to memory. could actually be caused + by to much RAM. To map a file to memory Windows needs a continuous block of virtual memory that the file + can fit in. A 32 bit memory space is limited to 4 GB of memory so the more physical memory you have the + less virtual memory you can have. 4 GB is not a lot of memory to work with and is one of the driving + factors towards a 64 bit system.

To my knowledge the GCF file format hasn't actually changed. + You would get the error messages Invalid GCF version number. or Corrupt file. if it + had.

+ Maybe some of you can help me out by posting how much RAM you have and weather or not you can open the + new 1 GB GCF file.

+ I have 2 GBs of RAM, allocated 2 GBs for the pagefile which has a max of 4 GBs set. So I do have enough + RAM, but still get the "Failed to map ..." error. I can open all the other GCFs as e.g. the + CS:Source Beta without a problem. I copied and renamed the preload file, so Steam couldn't put a lock on + it. What should I try to fix the problem? Any help appreciated.

+ I tried to open the same preload file with the same version of gcfscape on a similiar PC with only 512 + MBs of RAM and was able to extract the contents of the preload. So there seems to be a bug in gcfscape + when running on machines with lots of RAM. I hope that helps.

+ Ok, I've done a little research and this is what I've found. You are right in the fact that every + application has its own virtual memory space, however, not all operating systems use this memory space + for file mapping. It turns out that both Windows 95 and Windows 98 use a shared memory space for file + mapping so if you have other programs running they may take up the memory space that GCFScape needs. In + Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP the memory space for file mapping is not shared but is part of + the application's virtual memory space.
+
+ It turns out that of the 4GB of virtual memory space available only 2GB is available for private use so + we only have 2GB of memory space to work of. This means that there is no way to map a file larger than + 2GB. It is also important to note that this memory space is also used by the various dynamic memory + allocations the program makes and the various libraries the program loads. Because file mapping requires + a continues block of virtual memory, larger files (such as the 1GB HL2 preload) will have a very hard + time finding sufficient space.

+ This does not, however, explain why the program seems to work consistently for me and consistently not + work for other users.

+ GCFScape relies heavily on file mapping as it is simply the most logical way to access a GCF file. I + may, however, be able to reprogram GCFScape to use two views of the GCF file. Also, could you tell me what the status bar (the bar at the bottom of your screen) + displays for one or two of your GCF files? GCF files are created on the fly so usually they are + different for different people, this makes them hard for me to debug.

+ I got it to work... Finally. I had to re-format my hard-drive... I'm not sure about anyone else though, + Microsoft's Service Pack 2 definately messed my computer up. I couldn't use anything that required the + .NET Framework.

+ A) SP2 in no way affects .NET applications
+ B) There is a patch for the v1.1 .NET framework. Make sure you have it
+ C) Your half-life.gcf file was either not fully aquired or it was corrupt.
+
+ The only thing SP2 changes is security. Yes the new stuff is annoying, but it is livable.

The actual message is:
Not enough storage is available to process this + command.

RAM, Swap and HD space should not be relevant because I think this is an issue with + virtual memory space. In Win98 I believe there is 2GB of virtual memory space which all applications + must share in a pool. MapViewOfFile will fail if it can't find sufficient continuous free space in the + virtual memory pool. This should only really be a problem with large allocations (like HLLib used + to make). HLLib will allocate a 16MB block for the header and 8KB blocks for file fragments (one at a + time). You really should have 16 MB of continuous free virtual memory space.
+
+ I will try to research the problem further, in the mean time I suggest you restart your computer and try + to open the GCF file without any other programs running. This will insure your virtual memory space is + clean and unfragmented.
+

+ Well still not working. I exited anything I could, only the ATI control panel and the Intel Heat Monitor + was online becouse they cant be turned off in basic way, and dont wanted to mess aroun too much. Same + effect.

+ Im having the same problem as alias, the error mapping the view of the file, and i have the basicly the + same system setup, windows 98 se, 40gb harddrive witha about 8 gigs left, 655 mb of ram, so i think its + an os error, im going to upgrade to xp and ill see if i have the same problem, ill post with + results

Love your programs. My question is: Is it possible to delete files within the GCF + file? Using the pakscape I' was able to delete an annoying .wav that was looping and wouldn't stop, + ap_rotor3.wav for the Apache, but couldn't remove it from Steam's GCF. I just downloaded you most resent + version GCFScape.

GCFScape will extract textures from Half-Life .bsp files, not Source .bsp files. You + can use bspzip (one of the tools that comes with the Source SDK) to extract the textures and other + resources from Source .bsp files.
+
+ As for the error, it sounds like Steam is trying to open the .bsp file but is set up incorrectly.
+

Nem don't know if you have seen it but theres a file on fileplanet with aversion of + gcf scape and a program that can supposedly make gcf files, i don't know what the creator is up to but + my best guess it that it is used to "encrypt" files, i don't think they can use it with steam + at least

+ Anyways, I am quite sure part of Valve's Steam plane was to create a GCF authoring suit for MOD + developers so they could distribute their MODs over Steam. This could be a manifestation of this, but I + don't think it is legitimate (possibly, as you said, a remnant of the Source leek).

makepak is in Steam/bin/. Plus IMO we are unlikely to see a GCF authoring tool from + Valve. GCFs are only useful when you have the mod hosted on the Steam servers to fill them up and that + could far more securely be done internally. :-)

True, but it will be interesting to see what happens to the major MODs that emerge. + Given how much the MOD community helped develop Half-Life into what it was, it would seem logical for + Valve to host major MODs on their servers, both publicizing them and easing bandwidth constraints. If + people are willing to buy Half-Life 2 for a specific MOD then why not? It is in their interest.

I've been using 1.2.6 for a little while but I kinda have one issue with it. This was + probably intentional but when you just barely move a folder in the left window pain or the + "explorer" window it will throw all the files within that folder into a temp directory in the + gcfscape folder. The reason I have an issue with it is because when I'm in a hurry and clicking on + folders, I usually end up unknowingly moving the folder a little bit and it extracts them. I find this + to be really annoying. I guess I could just be really careful with it but I really don't see why it does + that.

GCF file's don't have identifying headers so it is hard to say whether a file is a + valid .gcf file or not. From the sounds of the error message, I think you have an invalid (null) .gcf + file. The last person that reported the above error had the same problem. You didn't get it from Steam + did you?

+ the .qc file is a script for compiling the model source files in to a .mdl

+ the GCF files only contain the compiled files that are used in the game. you will most likely not find + any source files other than what is included in the SDK.

+ And it also sounds like you are only looking in the 'half-life 2 content.gcf', which only contains the + compiled game maps (the .bsp files). the other game sources are stored in the 'source ***.gcf' files. +

You need to ahev steam installed with a user accound that has a valid copy of HL2 + & CS:S registered to it. If you don't have HL2, buy a copy. Once you own a copy, you can install it + from the My Games panel (or from a CD if it's the boxed retail version).

+ If you're trying to hack HL2/CS:S, then go away and don't come back.

I'm having some difficulty in extracting specific materials from CS:S for use in DoD. + GCF to extract / export the specific materials, then using the VTFedit prog. (which is very cool by the + way)
+ Should I copy or recreate the entire folder, ..in this case DE-Nuke and it's contents, or just the vtf, + vtm of the materials I want to use?
+ They're not showing up in the "metal" material folder when I try just the specific + materials.......Clearly,...I'm missing some important step.

+ I'd make the materials from scratch,...but I can't get that damn TGA to vtex prog. conversion to work + either.

+ Did I mention that mapping used to be easier?......and fun.what

Ok, well, you've probably noticed in the .gcf file that each material has both a .vtf + and a .vmt file. You need both to use the material. If you look at say metalbar001a.vmt (in notepad) it + will look like:

+ In this case, the $basetexture tells the engine where to find the .vtf file, specifically the .vtf is in + the metal folder and called metalbar001a.vtf (the extension is omitted since all textures are .vtf files + and the metal folder is relative to the materials folder (cstrike/materials). So, it follows, if you + want to use the same material in DOD, you would have to copy both the .vmt and .vtf to the + dod/materials/metal folder. If you do not (say you choose the dod/materials/custom folder) you will have + to change the $basetexture to read custom/metalbar001a.

UPDATE,.........90 minutes + later.

OK,...that was a really slow and tedius trial and error process before the material + finally showed up in Hammer.
BTW,...this is all in an effort to re-release a map originally + created for the old HL engine.

If you are distributing a map with custom content, you might want to check out Rof's + Pakrat + which embeds the content in your .bsp. I'm not sure if the bug where embedded models wouldn't work has + been fixed though (with the Source engine, not the tool).
+
+ As for where everything goes, its best just to examine the structure of an existing MOD (though + GCFScape). More less, materials and textures go in the materials folder and models go in the models + folder (though their materials go in the materials folder). Everything should be in a subfolder, i.e. + you should never have "materials/mymaterial.vmt", instead, + "materials/myfolder/mymaterial.vmt".

maybe it's just me, i don't know, but when I try to open the installer i get an error + that says "The setup files are corrupted. Clease obtain a new copy of the program"

it should run no matter what (due to the 32-bit emulation), but if you have the + 64-bit version of the .NET 2.0, it should run in 64-bit mode. be sure to download the most recent vrsion + (v1.4.1). The download page also has links to the .NET downloads (including the x64 version).

+ Currently I'm trying to export a Counter-Terrorist model from CS:S, but there are VTX files as well as + PHY files. I'm not sure which one's to export.
+
+ [I plan to assign a Half-Life 1 model to its skeleton and bring it back into CS:S.
+
+ EDIT: Found the files I believe are the right ones.
+
+ I exported (GIGN):

+

+

+ When I went to decompile the model with Milkshape I got this error, followed by a crash:

+ The textures must be somewhere else?

+ EDIT: I tried decompiling without textures and it just crashed instantly, mentioning the IDST,.smd
+

yes i did and.. in the FAQ.. it only says thet if any start up problems persists... + you should install NET. framework or whats its name cause its writen in C++ NET. framework and it + requires it... and thet other things there only say about if you get problems trying to open a file... + but i dont have problems at file unpacking or something, cause i cant even get the program to run.. and + yes'v installed NET. This really isn't an appropriate place to seek help with Steam. The official Valve + forums are where you want to be. That said, debugging isn't going to help you unless you have the source + code to Steam. I have very little experience with Vista, but judging by your error message, it + may be a problem of permissions. Try elevating the privileges of Steam to the administrative + level.

well u just go to new game and well if the default settings r OK for you just press + START then if u have bots (look for them on google) open the console by ` or ~ key (it should b below + ESCAPE) and type in - add_bot_ct for a Counter terrorist bot or bot_add_t for bot on the terrorist side! + but if u want to play online go to the thingy below NEW GAME then wait for the server list to finish + loading and join the most comfortable game for you, (though you might get kicked or booted for no + reason)theforce

I have a question:

+ I am trying to test some custom made models on HL2 but when i put it in the game folder nothing + happens.
+ The game is still taking it's resources from the .gcf files independent of the files i added in the hl2 + folder.
+ Now don't ask me silly questions like " dude did you place them in the models folder?" yes i + did everything and checked and double checked everything...how can i bypass this or if not possible, how + to overwrite and replace the files in the .gcf files?

Hi im trying to use GCFScape to export the HL2 files into Portal, so I can use the + Portal Gun in the HL2 campaigns. I have all of the orange box plus more.
+
+ My problem has a few parts:
+ 1. When extracting files from the GCF I do not want to overwrite existing files, nor do I want to + extract the 0 Byte files.
+ 2. I do not know why each GCF has 0 byte files that are also in another GCF (with real bytes), but this + is creating a problem for me trying to get all the data in one place.
+ 3. I do not know what all files the HL2 campaigns need, and which GCFs they are in. The ones I have been + extracting from are: Half Life 2 Content, Half Life 2 2007 base Content, Source 2007 Shared Materials, + Source 2007 Shared Models, Source 2007 Shared Sounds, Source Materials, Source Models, Source + Sounds.
+ 4. I do not know exactly where to extract all the materials because the portal file structure is + confusing. In portal/materials there are materials folders but also a models folder, but there is also a + models folder at portal/models.
+ 5. I have been able to launch a HL2 map from portal, and use the portal gun as expected. However most of + the textures have a purple overlay, some textures are missing and you can see thru the grid, some + textures show up as purple checkered board, some textures show up as static like on the TV (ant race), + the lighting/shading on all surfaces changes from bright to dark and in between while moving or rotating + camera.

+ I have seen several videos and screen shots of people successfully playing HL2 maps in Portal, + essentially as if they where bonus maps I suppose. Unfortunately I cannot seem to get all the content in + the right place. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

On startup of GCFscape v1.4.1 i recieve and error: "The application failed to + initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."

+ I looked in the readme and it only had the solution for the error: "The application failed to initialize + properly (0xc0000135). Click ok to terminate the application."

+ I had already gotton Microsoft .NET frameword version 2.0 installed fine and yet i still get the error + shrug

I tried searching for information on the error, but I wasn't able to find anything + helpful. It looks like a problem with your .NET installation. You might try reinstalling .NET v2.0 or + playing around with GCFScape v1.3.x which uses .NET v1.1

+ Make sure that you have .Net Framework v2 installed and not v2b. You can download the program from + microsoft. If it still doesn't work, then you must have an invalid registry, you can use TuneUp + Utilities 2006 to fix it. If all fails, you'll have to revert back to the
+ previous GCFScape version (1.3.1) and have .Net Framework 1.1
+ installed.

Sorry man, don't know if I can help you. If the bug was in GCFScape you would get a + different error message because GCFScape is written in managed code. It doesn't look like Windows is + getting to GCFScape's code at all, instead it looks like a bug with .NET or something funny with your + Windows installation.

+ I can only recommend that you get any Windows updates available to you (but it sounds like you've + already tried this).

Hi Nem, I just wanted to add a comment regarding GCF fragmentation. Many people do + not realize the difference between the gcf file itself being fragmented on their hard disk as opposed + the files inside the gcf archive being fragmented. Obviously, GCFScape defragments the files inside the + gcf file, but to gain the utmost performance, users should first defragment their hard drives to get the + gcf file itself contiguous on the drive, then defragment the GCF with 'Scape. Running the GCFScape + defragmenter obviously then leaves the physical file alone on the drive, only rearranging files within a + file. I just thought I would mention that. Could it be gcf fragmentation is the source of Valve's + infamous 'stuttering' bug in HL2? shrug Please keep the quality projects coming!

Yep, you're correct; to get the most out of defragmenting you should defragment both + your hard drive and your GCF files. If you had to choose but one, I'd recommend your GCF files, + as my studies have shown they can contain upwards of 10,000 fragmentations which you're extremely + unlikely to find in an NTFS file system. However, fragmentations in your file system can be more + extreme...
+
+ And it could just be the placebo effect, but I've noticed Steam and HL2 are a lot more responsive and so + called stutters are much less exaggerated after defragmenting everything. This really is the main reason + I wrote the tool, I was sick of load times.

Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but i downloaded your converter.. and + tried converting a .bsp file, it ended up becoming an .ent file this is all well and good the + extractions worked fine of the original file everything came out as .vmf's but i need the original file + as a .vmf and must keep all the internal files together (map)

+ as valve hammer can only seem to open .vmf's and i got the file as a whole .bsp map rather than single + bits.

+ This happened to me as I tried to defrag "half-life deathmatch source.gcf", but it seems to be + a cosmetic problem only, because it's an gui-error. If I click on "Weiter" (meaning + "Continue"), gcf-scape still works propely and the file doesn't seem to be damaged (Steam does + not complain).

+ It looks like a problem with HLLib's total data calculation, I will release a fix shortly. The bug + shouldn't cause any damage to your .gcf as long as it is fully acquired, at least nothing you can't fix + by validating the game. I specifically designed the algorithm to withstand a crash or system + failure.

i + just tried to defrag my gcf's.
i had just enabled it so it can write. Then i tried to derag, after + pressing defrag a window comes up saying it may take a few min's. i pressed ok, then a another window + comes up and says:

You can always reload a .gcf file once GCFScape is opened. So if you double click a + .gcf file to open it, and then change your options in GCFScape, reloading the .gcf from the Recent + Files menu will apply the new settings.

+ Your options will be saved when you restart GCFScape, so I don't think a close button is really + necessary. Also, if you have your SteamApps folder open, you can just drag files onto GCFScape to open + them instead of repeatedly double clicking.

You don't need to restart GCFScape to apply the options, just reload the .gcf.
+
+ As for Steam, Volatile Access allows GCFScape to "share" files with Steam (which is why you + are required to disable it before defragmenting). If Steam is using the .gcf file and you disable + Volatile Access, GCFScape won't be able to open the file and thus wont be able to defragment it. If + Steam isn't using the .gcf file, GCFScape will be able to open it and defragment it, but Steam won't + (while it's open in GCFScape).
+
+ Generally I would suggest not having Steam open at the same time just to be cautions, but because of the + above described failsafes, it should be OK. GCFScape or Steam will give you an error if there is a + conflict of access.

Visual Studio automatically generates manifest files for C++ applications. I think + the problem is related to two things:

  1. GCFScape uses a version of HLLib compiled with VS 2003 (.Net v1.1).

  3. Microsoft has released service packs for various versions of the .NET framework which the user may + need (Windows Update).

I reformatted my computer to get rid of Visual Studio. I installed Windows XP Pro + then did all the updates. I installed the .NET Framework 2.0 runtime from the link provided in the FAQ + section. The new version still generates an error message: "The application has failed to start + because the application configuration is incorrect." This is a fresh install of Windows and the + .NET Framework and it's not working!

EDIT:

I looked in the Event Viewer and a more + detailed error message was in there:

"Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be + found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system."

The + source of the error was "SideBySide".

There were two more errors that appeared + along side this one. They are:

"Resolve Partial Assembly failed for Microsoft.VC80.CRT. + Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your + system."

and

"Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Documents and + Settings\Andy\Desktop\GCFScape.exe. Reference error message: The operation completed + successfully."

EDIT2:

I tried putting msvcr80.dll in the .NET folder (the one + with the version number as the name) and C:\WINDOWS\system32 and it didn't work + yet

I love this tool. I've been using it for ages to keep my Source games running their + best on my less-than-optimal system.

+ I have hit a snag, however, in that one of the new TF2 files is larger than 2Gb. The file size shown by + GCFScape is a large, negative number and it seems unable to defragment the file. I'm running Windows XP + if that makes a difference. I think I recall this setback being documented somewhere but I want to make + sure you're aware of it.

Hello there NEM, my name is Opti and I am a long time user of GCFScape and it's + tools.

I recently got an error in GCF that will not allow me to extract any skins from the + Half-Life 2 game or GarrysMod, only Day Of Defeat. I am reinstalling Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod and Day + Of Defeat and what not, but the error still exists.

The VTF files show up as gray, which I am + assuming is meaning they are missing. I have Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod installed and still the error + persists.

I tried looking up the error on forums and sites and still nothing. I have + reinstalled GCF and the error still occurs.

+ This happens with a Myriad of other things as well. It shows some of the VMF files are there but not VTF + even after I load up both Half Life and Garry's Mod. It really bugs me :[

When I try to load any file that is in gray text it says this:
+

+ Can anyone help me out with this?

The Grey colour indicates in fact that the files are missing. Since I've recently + heard more often of such problems, I'd like to take a look myself, so could you please tell me which + GCF-File you are opening?

+ Try half-life 2 content.gcf
+ Been a problem since the Mac update.
+
+ On clan server (Windows 2003 R2)
+
+ d1_eli_01.bsp and a few others are grey.
+ If you run validate it says they are incomplete.
+
+ root\hl2\maps\d1_eli_01.bsp
+
+ I have deleted HL2 and re-downloaded. Makes no difference.
+
+ On home PC Win7 x64 the files are not grey and do validate / extract. However when I uploaded to Synergy + server and select map it states "Server version differs"
+

Okay, I took a look. When you redownload the + GCF, you don't get all the files. I noticed that VALVe moved the missing files into half-life 2 2007 + base content.gcf. You will find what you are looking for in there :)

+ I assume you had HL2 installed there before the update. The files were left over, it's the same for me + (my GCF is complete, but when I redownload, some files are missing).

Indeed, it's the GCF's fault. Afaik, it contains a table of + files which are inside.

Okay. So I believe it is because of the stupid Mac update (No offense to Mac users, + it just sucks) but I figured out it will not load up my "Source Materials" content folder but + will however load up my "Source 2007 Shared Materials" folder and load up everything in that. + I got a little upset at first, but no worry now.

+ If anyone is having the same problem as I am with the GCF files not being able to download and what not, + please use:
+
+ SOURCE 2007 SHARED MATERIALS" and I believe it will work. Thank you for your help though.apple

i just tried opening the latest files and it worked...which file are you opening? + remember that you need to open the _dir vpk file!

Doesn't work with new Valve GCF format, just updated half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf and + says Incomplete for all files, extraxts them as 0 bytes files. Any update coming soon?

I hope people still read these comments. Using the latest version of GCFscape, but + .vmt files no longer appear when opening the new .vpk files. I can't see vmt's in TF2, HL2, or any other + steampipe game it seems. Is this something that can be fixed?

+ Going through the files such as tf2_textures_dir with a text editor, I can see the files still exist in + there as plaintext. What's going on?

If your looking for the TF2.VPK + files its in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf
