Auto + Seamer - NemPosted: May 26th, 2003 - 6:01:04 pm +
+
+
About: +

Very simple program I made for a friend and my own personal use. It turned out to be soo good at what + it did that I decided to throw it up here. The program takes an ordinary texture (it loads and saves + bitmaps, or you can just copy and paste the textures in which is easier) and provides you with three + little algorithms to seam it. It has a weighted averaging system which works well with pretty much any + texture, an offset algorithm which works really well with some textures and not with others, and a + speckle algorithm which is like a logical noise algorithm to help add some randomness back into the + seam. The program is NOT optimized in any way. It works fine with small textures (like 256 * 256) but + starts to slow down significantly when you get up to around 512 * 512 (which you really shouldn't have + in a Half-Life map...) Thats it. Hope you find it useful.

Yeah it is a pretty sound and good idea! I have been having trouble make different + mutiply image in tga format all seamly tile togather and i still have failed because i don't really + understand how to achieve this effect and keep all my images togather and the clone stamp and the offset + ack so much! I need a really good tut! :)
+
+ Ohh back to the auto seamer it is great except for the offset when you use it messes around with the + color of the image and makes it really bright!

Fantastic program, works very efficiently and flawlessly when used properly. A + tutorial may be needed, however, for the more inexperienced users such that they may understand how to + use the numbers to their advantage when seaming a texture.

  • +
  • Option to view scene info & crosshair.
  • +
  • Option to render models or not.
  • +
  • Option to render the skybox or not.
  • +
  • Solid and textured render modes.
  • +
  • Right click and drag to move camera's look at position.
  • +
  • 'Z' key puts you into the old mode of 'looking' (like in WC).
  • +
  • Ability to load a new level without restarting the app.
  • +
  • WASD can be used to move (R & F for up and down respectively).

  • Minor additional optimizations.

+ I'm assuming by models you mean .mdl files. BSP_View actually can render these for WON installations + (providing they are set up right) but I really have to recommend BSP Viewer as it is far more advanced + and bug free then BSP_View.
+
+ On a side note, what you have requested is on BSP Viewer's todo list; I just haven't got around to it + yet.

Duuno, MS isn't exactly known for following standards, they like to change things + up + with every release of VS. Maybe try casting everything within pow() to a double (and check that pow() + takes a double).

BSP Viewer requires multitexturing support and two texture units to render a BSP + in a single pass. If you are getting the error BSP::Initialize() Failed. then you don't have the + minimum system requirements to run BSP Viewer.
+
+ I am surprised that a GeForce mx 200 and a Radeon 9000 don't have multitexturing support (any recent + card should) but it never helps to go for the cheaper video cards.
+
+ Support for double pass rendering may be added in the future (in fact I will try to focus on it for the + next release) but it's not likely to happen anytime within the next three weeks.
+
+ Thanks for posting your hardware, that always helps,

About + Batch Compiler - NemPosted: May 26th, 2003 - 4:00:59 pm +
+

About: +

Batch Compiler is a Front End program designed to compile all your maps in the simplest and fastest + way possible, batch files. The program works on Batch Compiler Specification (BCS) files which are + dynamic configuration files capable of specifying almost everything in Batch Compiler, from the + switches, to the way the batch file is written and what is written where. Batch Compiler comes with + specification files for the current Source Tools, Zoners Tools, the old Quake Tools, HLFix, RESGen, + Map Backup and many other programs. Each switch contains a brief description on what it does to help + make everything easy and centralized.

If hlbsp.exe crashes, contact it's maintainers, I don't + maintain it. However, your post has me suspicious. Is your computer stable? It almost sounds like you + might have hardware issues. You might want to d/l memtest86 and give it + a whirl.

Ok i got it fixed :) It wasnt a mem problem. It was that my bc was old and i was + compiling with the new tools in a old back words order.
+
+ So I noticed my bc was old even though i thought i had the new one instaled, lol. got it, and ran it the + way I was told to run it and Now it works better then before :).
+
+ Now i just have to figure out why the new steam update is lagging out my pc online :(.

+
+ Atleast, that's what the windows message error says.
+ It shows also " (0xc0000135) "

As the batch compiler Download page states, you need to have the Microsoft .NET + Framework installed to use the batch compiler.

You can get it either through:

Windows + Update

or

Microsoft.com

You + also could have gotten this information by reading the BAtch + Compiler FAQ

+ Yep, the installer is for the runtimes so all you have to do is overwrite the executables if you have + v2.0.0 or later.
+
+ I find it very odd that you can't get the installer to work, its Borland's InstallShield Express which + is a very widely used installer. Have you had this problem with other apps?

I get the error when I go to add/remove programs and try to + uninstall the batch compiler too. I even tried reinstalling the 2.0.0 version and get the error also. Good to hear. I hope you don't mind the changes, most were to make the Source tools + more elegant to use and backwards compatibility should exist as long as you define Input and Output + variables (or simply include the following .bci file in all your specifications):

+
Code:
+

Once

Variable
{
Name "Input"
Type "Folder"
Optional + "False"
Hint "File input directory."
}

Variable
{
Name "Output"
Type + "Folder"
Optional "False"
Hint "File output directory."
}

Cool. I very much like that change.

I've uploaded the new version. Test it + out, try to break it, ect...

The majority of the Source profiles are empty, mainly because I + didn't know what settings to use. However the Batch and the Steam pages will be setup.

Nem, my + only question is how do you create the update hashes? Maybe I missed it, but I dodn't see any thing like + an export button like on the preious versions.

NoBody:
There is still the problem with the + drop-down menus and I still do not know why this is happening. For now, just tell people to scroll + through the options with the keyboard arrow keys.
+ See below
+
+ EDIT:
+ Even newer version up. I think I just fixed the drop-down menu problem. So NoBody, tell me if I atcually + did.

Ah, yes, the hashes. Remember that conversation we had about getting a fully featured + automatic update tool for any program? Well I'm almost done it, it's actually all part of the Automatic + Update Core Library that comes with Batch Compiler but you need a small .exe to use it (still have one + or two loose ends to tie up). Tell me what email you want me to use and I'll send the .exe to you.

Bluefang, I tested the installer out today and it did a good job of setting the + Source specifications up, but the Zoners specifications had errors in them. Where one would expect to + find the "Steam" or "HL" stages (in the Normal and Advanced .bcs files), there was some variable + "%game_path%" (or something to that effect) and the Zoners specifications were unusable.

i had the problem to once but as it went away after trying instaling again i ignored + it, also i never heared of any one else having the problem.
+
+ Is it posible it happens if you set it to hl2 when installing.
+
+ You seam to hae missed the releas of zhlt 3.21 it fixes the shadow bug's
+ the light data switch was disabled by accident tho but will return in the next releas (3.22).
+
+ A few ppl has also experinced problem where it says that it is missing a dll, patching the latest zhlt + in has fixed that problem for all of them.
+
+ edit:
+ ow and about that copy thing, some times i want to copy the text entered it a feeld but ctrl+c make it + compile and right clicking only gives me the option to reset. i work around it by pressing ctrl+x and + then putting it back in the feeld with ctrl+v, a bit silly tho.

"Is it posible it happens if you set it to hl2 when installing. "
+
+ That's probably what it is. When it is set up for normal HL, it replaces that variable with the correct + execution stage. With HL2, it copys them but dosn't replace that variable. I'll change that in the next + release.
+
+ And thanks for pointing out the tool updated. I was unaware of them. Those will be added in the next + release as well.

+ Well, this looks like a pretty spiffy library... but you should create dsw and dsp files for people who + are jacked with VC++6. But I'm not one of them (I have neither--I compile them all by hand using .NET + toolkit and lots of microsoft SDK's happy).

If I had Visual Studio 6.0 I would have but I don't. That said, there is no + reason to need to compile the library (as the binaries are included) unless you want to make changes to + it and if a Visual Studio 6.0 user does want to make changes, it is not to hard for them to convert (or + recreate) the project files.

Visual Studio 6.0 users might also be interested in the free build + of Visual + C++ .NET 2005 Express Beta from Microsoft.

.NET allows different languages to coexsist in the same project, or something along + those lines. Wouldn't simply compiling HLLib into C++ .NET do the trick?

C++ .NET is an extension of C++ and is managed in the same way that C# and VB code is + managed. However, C++ .NET still allows for native C++ code. If you want to use native C++ in a .NET + language other than C++ .NET you need to write a managed class that has the same structure as its + equivalent unmanaged class that performs the necessary conversions, eg:

+
Code:
+

// Original class
class CExample
{
public:
CExample()
{
+ string = 0;
}

~CExample()
{
delete []string;
}

char *GetString()
+ {
return string;
}

void SetString(const char *newString)
{
delete + []string;
string = new char[strlen(newString) + 1];
strcpy(string, newString);
+ }

private:
char *string;
};

using namespace + System::Runtime::InteropServices;

// Wrapper class
__gc class Example
{
public:
+ System::String *GetString()
{
return new System::String(example.GetString());
}

+ void SetString(System::String *newString)
{
char *string = (char + *)(Marshal::StringToHGlobalAnsi(newString)).ToPointer();
example.SetString(string);
+ Marshal::FreeHGlobal((System::IntPtr)string);
}

private:
CExample example;
};
+

+ However, I will be completing HLLib 2.0 soon which will have a C wrapper which you should be able to + directly import into any C# project (in fact almost any project in any language). +

I created rpm packages for openSuSE 11.1 (and 11.0)

here + are repos: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/etamPL/

Hi

I try to use HLLib with MinGW compiler, but I have this + error:
C:\...\HLLib.h|740|error: 'HANDLE' does not name a type

Where is normally defined + HANDLE ?

EDIT 1: I have added this lines at the begin of HLLib.h, and now HANDLE is + ok:
#ifdef _WIN32
# include <windows.h>
#endif

EDIT 2: Now I've several + error with linker such as:
undefined reference to `HLLib::CPackage::GetRoot()'

The linker + finds HLLib.lib, but the c++ function are unknown (I use directly the c++ class and + functions)

EDIT 3: A solution, but it's ugly, it's to include all files from source in my + project. It compiles and links correctly :)
+ ============================================
+
+ Another problem : in the main.c of HLExtract, it's hl.h that is included (line 20), but it doesn't + exist. What is hl.h ?
+
+ Thank.
+

You need to include ..\lib\HLLib.h not <hl.h> in Main.c; the latter is for the + Linux environment. The top should probably read:

+
Code:
+
#ifdef _WIN32
# include "..\lib\HLLib.h"
# ifdef _MSC_VER
# pragma + comment(lib, "../../../lib/HLLib.lib")
# endif
#else
# include <hl.h>
#endif
+
+ Including Windows.h before HLLib.h should work fine without modifying any HLLib files.
+
+ If you aren't using Visual Studio, you should build your own .lib and .dll. +

Just noticed that the link HLLib v2.2.0 Archive (338 KB) links to the + non-existent file http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/files/files/hllib212.zip + rather than http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/files/files/hllib220.zip + which is what it should be.

Hey, I just downloaded the sources and tried to compile them on Linux, and I got + errors about functions like "strlen", etc. I had to include <string.h> in 2 or 3 files in HLLib to + be able to compile it.

+ hey nem, just a general question really.
+ Im curious, will you support HL2 when it releases with some/most of your programs? or do you have any + other plans for HL2?

+ Thats the plan, I really want to see what TG will be able to do with the HL2 engine and BC already is + dynamic enough to support any compile tools as long as it has a specification file for them.
+
+ Odd place to post a question though...
+
+ If I have time I'd like to do a whole editor, but at the moment I'm realy busy.

Hum, I remember someone else complaining of exactly the same thing. I have no + idea why this happens, the code is correct as far as I can tell. Maybe a bug with the .NET + framework?

shrug

On + a side note you should be able to open your .map files by + right clicking on the file and selecting MAP Viewer to open the file with.

MAP Viewer only opens .map files, what you want is a BSP Viewer such as BSP_View. + Note that BSP_View is a legacy application that does not work with Steam.

+ i am having the same frezz on open bug where but shell executing works as dose the resent list.
+
+ Map viewers camerea hase the same bug as the one in bsp viewr, it move x2 speed on z axis (up down)
+
+ a nother "bug" i found is that the info will become blacks if draw selected is not set.
+
+ sugestion:
+ support transparency.
+ make a options window wher you can set most of the stuff in mv.ini
+ Camera.Speed should be lowered to somthing like 0.75
+ Fog.End = the "MaxRange" from the map file
+
+ i also sugest that you treat the bevel texture the same way as null (bevel is a textur tool used in the + >p12 compileres)

  • +

  • +
  • Filter using wildcards.
  • +
  • Retain settings between uses.
  • +
  • Fast responsive interface.
  • +
  • Open source.

* Includes binaries built for Visual Studio 2005, 2008 and 2010.

+ + Special Characters: + +

There are a number of special characters that can prefix search terms. You can string several special + characters together to create more advanced terms. The actual search string starts after the first + invalid special character or opening quote. These special characters are:

+ +
    +
  1. The ampersand (&) specifies that the search string should be combined with a logical + "and". (Note, this is the default implicit behavior - you probably wont even need to type an + ampersand).
  2. +
  3. The vertical bar (|) specifies that the search string should be combined with a logical + "or".
  4. +
  5. The hyphon (-) and apostrophe (!) specify that the search string should be negated. +
  6. +
  7. The backward slash (\) or forward slash (/) specify that the whole file or project + path should be searched, not just the file or project name.
  8. +
  9. The colon (:) specifies that the project or project path should be searched and not the + file name or file path.
  10. +
  11. The double quote (") can be used to surround the above special characters (or spaces) to + effectively "escape" them.
  12. +
  13. The asterisk (*) can be used as a multi character wildcard.
  14. +
  15. The question mark (?) can be used as a single character wildcard.
  16. +

About + Terrain Generator - NemPosted: May 26th, 2003 - 4:04:41 pm +
+
+
About: +

Nem's Mega 3D Terrain Generator is a relatively new terrain generator that takes a step in a + completely different direction. Unlike traditional generators where the user must depend solely on the + generators generation abilities, this generator gives its users complete 3D control over what their + terrain looks like. Users start off with a flat piece of landscape, then add to it with one, or a + combination of many powerful generation options. They then have several tools at their disposal to + literally grab the terrain and pull it as they want it. The terrain can be saved as a .tgm file for + latter use and exported to a .map file for use in any map editing programs for Quake engine based + games such as Half-Life. Additionally terrain can be exported as a .t3d for use in UnrealEd or a .rmf + or .vmf file for use in Hammer or any number of other supported formats.

+ yeahbaby
+
+ I was wondering Nem % since TM can export to a map file would it be possible to convert it to a tgm file + and bring it back into TM?
+
+ That would be very helpful as sometimes it's nice to adjust the terrain around things you have built + rather than just around the terrain generated.
+
+ Since map files are jest a type of txt format and things built in a map editor are the same type of + polyhedron-brush output as the terrain I would think that it would be a simple reversal of the converter + you have in TG now. what
+ Maybe that's over simplifying it, I hope not.
+ happy
+
+ I understand it would not convert entities which could be eliminated prior to conversion or left out of + the map file when exported out of a game editor by the creator to get around that problem.
+
+ Anyway, it's just a suggestion but I sure hope you would add that feature.
+
+ Thank you and take care,

+ In reply to Xenocide in GCFScape v1.1.0 Beta thread who asked about the size of terrain you can use
+
+ I have been messing arround with TG since a few days now and found the max you can go without other + buildings is 60*60 that is on my P4 2 Gh. that's without any kind of optimisation and it kills your + r_speeds and FPS in Halflife.

+ Since upgrading to the latest version, the Flatten tool takes ages to drag the selection up to the + required height. In addition, the pop-up description when you hover the mouse pointer over a tool icon + flickers rapidly so you cannot see what it says.
+
+ In the old version, the Flatten tool worked virtually instantaneously.

+ Flickering icons seems to be related to which video card drivers you have installed. I know my Matrox + card doesn't cause flickering icons but my ATI card does.

The old texturing system was holding me back mainly + because the shear amount of work it needed (I rewrote close to 1500 lines and added another 1000 or + so).

Suggestion: It seems .dxf and .asc formats are not very texture friendly. Thus i + suggest for the .dxf format export, please don't provide any texture information or material group + information. (make it like v1.2.3 that gives me with a clean white texture-less mesh to work with). + However, i was wishing for perhaps another file format export that is texture friendly (eg. Wavefront + .obj or .3ds format). Basically, it should read the no. of textures being used in the .tgm file and + create a unique material group for each unique texture being used. Then, each face of the exported + terrain shoudl be assigned accordingly to either one of the material groups. For example, if my .tgm + uses 3 unique textures, then the exported file format should consist of 3 material groups and each face + of the exported terrain should belong to either one of the 3 material groups. Also, UV mapping is + checked for each individual terrain patch from the .tgm and this is translated into the exported file + format as well. Thus, the exported file format will be an exact replica of what i see in Nem's terrain + generator. I know this is *A LOT* to ask for but i think it's worth it. You could have terrain .mdls. + created very fast that way instead of painstakingly texturing the terrain model in MS3d, eg.
+ I'm not complaining though. But imagine if i could do it all in Nem's Terrain Generator...with just 1 + program...!

To convert a single texture, open it up then select Export from the + File menu. You can save as both .bmp and .jpg, but I recommend .tga as it is a lossless format + and preserves the alpha channel.

To convert a bunch of textures, use the Convert Folder + tool in the Tools menu. Just select an Input Folder (where your .vtf files are), an + Output Folder (where you want your .tgs files to go), enter *.vtf as the filter and press + Convert. If Recurse is checked, subfolders will also be processed.

The default settings should work (as long as your .tga has an alpha channel). + My recommended spray settings are:

Normal Format: DXT1 - This is a compressed RGB format that + VTFEdit will use if your texture doesn't have an alpha channel.

Alpha Format: DXT5 or DXT3 + - This is a compressed RGBA format that VTFEdit will use if your texture has an alpha channel. + Use DXT5 if your alpha channel is smooth or DXT3 if your alpha channel is sharp (i.e. you're alpha + channel is only there so your spray can be non-square - so its 0 or 255).
+
+ Generate Mipamps: Unchecked. Sprays look best when you don't use mipmaps because they aren't LOD scaled. + This will also allow you to generate larger animated textures because it uses less memory.
+
+ If VTFEdit is not generating an alpha channel then your .tga doesn't have an alpha channel. If you're + using PhotoShop, make sure you only have one layer when you export, and that this layer has an alpha + channel (you can add channels in the channels tab).

nVIDIA's nvDXTLib + is exceptionally unstable. The error means the library crashed; I can only recommend that you retry.
+
+ There is an update to the library which I will try to add support for in the near future. (Don't hold + your breath though, each version seems to add as many bugs as it fixes.)

Select Import from the File menu, then in the File Open Dialog, select + each frame you want in your animation (hold ctrl of shift down to do this).
+
+ I tried adding direct support for animated .gif files, but there is a bug in DevIL which corrupts the + image data after it is depalettized so you'll have to extract each frame in an external program before + importing.

I'm not really familiar with editing Source crosshairs, but I assume you would also + have to edit the crosshair's .vmt file to add the AnimatedTexture proxy. If you created a new + crosshair, then I think you also have to use the cl_crosshair_file console command to select it. +

About: + +

VTFLib is a LGPL open source programming library, written by Neil Jedrzejewski + and I. VTFLib provides a C and C++ API that, with a few simple functions, can open and save .vtf and + .vmt files, providing access to all known features. The library functions independent of Steam, + allowing third party applications to use the library without Steam present or runningi on the target + system.

+ +

VTFLib includes two GPL example applications, VTFCmd and VTFEdit. VTFCmd is a C command line frontend + for VTFLib that can create .vtf and .vmt files from various source formats. It is similar in + functionality to Valve's vtex Source SDK utility, but offers a lot more control. VTFEdit is a C++ .NET + graphical frontend for VTFLib with viewing and creation capabilities. Both VTFCmd and VTFEdit support + several source image formats, including, but not limited to .bmp, .dds, .gif, .jpg, .png and .tga.

Yes, this is the planned focus for the next release, probably in the form of an + export .vmt and auto export .vmt methodology.
+
+ It would be helpful if someone could provide templates for the various typical .vmt files (normal + texture, bump mapped texture, HUD texture, sprite, etc).

I've already added VMT support.

If you enable Auto Create VMT File from + the options menu, it will create a VMT with a $basetexture and a default shader whenever you save a VTF + file. If you select Create VMT File from the Tools menu, you can specify all of the above + options and create your VTF files. In order for the paths to be correct, your VTF file must be in a + materials folder.

+
+
About: +

VTFLib v1.3.2 - VTFLib is available in a two flavours. The Source Code Archive contains the + source code, library and prebuilt binaries for VTFLib, VTFEdit and VTFCmd. Download this if you want + to modify the library or example applications (or just see how it all works). The Binary + Archive contains library and prebuilt binaries for VTFLib, VTFEdit and VTFCmd. Download this if + you just want to develop with VTFLib (or want access to all the binaries).

+ +

VTFLib also uses nvDXT, + and VTFEdit and VTFCmd also use DevIL 1.7.8. In + order to compile, you will need to download those libraries and add their paths to Visual Studio.

VTFEdit is written in Visual Studio .NET 2003 (.NET v1.1), not Visual Studio .NET + 2005 (.NET v2.0). The two versions have a completly different syntax for C++ code and are not + compatible. You can compile VTFEdit in Visual Studio .NET 2005, however, if you change the + Common Language Runtime Support (general options) to /clr:oldSyntax.
+
+ I'll likely convert the project to 2005 in the future, but it is too much of a pain and I have too many + other projects to do so at the moment.

I have a question for you Nem. I posted in the forum as well and just to be double + sure I thought I should post here too.
+
+ Anyways I am designing a Scripter for CS:Source, and I was wondering if you could point me into the + right direction or at least provide some kind of code that will teach me how to use your library in a C# + project. If it helps these are the things that I would like to do.
+
+ A. Allow the user to view file info
+ - File Size
+ - Flags(Like the ones in your program: VTFEdit
+ - Dimensions(Width x Height)
+ - Version
+ - File Format
+ - Frames
+
+ B. Allow the user to pre-view a selected vtf/spray file in a picturebox.
+
+ Again any and all help is greatly appreciated I do know about "Dllimport" with C# but I have yet to work + with it. So if you could either respond here or at the forums I would greatly appreciate it.

Guessing + that it was because dxtlib was built last for VC2010, I decided to try to dig up some source codes to + build a lib for VC2010, but all I found was code in tools/src, but it seemed to build the library I + needed (unless I'm wrong, which I could be). But it yielded this error:

Error 1 error LNK2019: + unresolved external symbol "enum NV_ERROR_CODE __cdecl nvDDS::nvDXTcompress(unsigned char const + *,unsigned int,unsigned int,unsigned int,enum nvPixelOrder,class nvCompressionOptions *,enum + NV_ERROR_CODE (__cdecl*)(void const *,unsigned int,struct MIPMapData const *,void *),struct tagRECT + const *)" + (?nvDXTcompress@nvDDS@@YA?AW4NV_ERROR_CODE@@PBEIIIW4nvPixelOrder@@PAVnvCompressionOptions@@P6A?AW42@PBXIPBUMIPMapData@@PAX@ZPBUtagRECT@@@Z) + referenced in function "unsigned char __cdecl nvDXTCompressWrapper(unsigned char *,unsigned + int,unsigned int,class nvCompressionOptions *,enum NV_ERROR_CODE (__cdecl*)(void const *,unsigned + int,struct MIPMapData const *,void *))" + (?nvDXTCompressWrapper@@YAEPAEIIPAVnvCompressionOptions@@P6A?AW4NV_ERROR_CODE@@PBXIPBUMIPMapData@@PAX@Z@Z) + C:\Users\Kevin\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Resources\vtflib130\sln\vs8\VTFLib\VTFFile.obj
+
+ I am wondering if this is because DDS_Utilities is now version 8.31.1127.1645? Something is getting + skewed. Anyway, I don't expect you to know the answer for fix anything, just thinking out loud + mostly.
+
+ I guess I can try it out on VS2008 tomorrow. But I was just wondering about this since this is my first + go with dealing with vtflib's source. Since I don't really need the DDS stuff I might just cut out all + of the dxtlib stuff.
+
+ By the by, long time lurker big time fan of your tools Nem! Thanks for making them!

The library is built using Visual Studio 2005 because the dependent nvDXTLib only + provides static libraries built for 2003 and 2005. There is a newer version of nvDXTLib, but I don't use + it because they removed features that I was using and completely changed the API.

nvDXTLib is + only necessary for creating .vtf images. If you just want to be able to read .vtf images, you can + rebuild the library with USE_NVDXT=0 defined.

Another option is to dynamically import the C + version of the API.

If you don't have nxDXTLib installed you will have to download + it and update your VC++ Directories to point to it.

Yeah, I did download/install it + from that page, but the build they have is different than the version required in vtflib (the legacy + page you link to only has build 8.31.1127.1645 available for download). I wish they had some sort of + previous releases list.

That said, I _do_ only need the library for reading .vtf files, so maybe + I will just build it without NVDXT. Thanks for the tip! That will probably save more time than + dynamically importing the C version of the API.

FYI, just an update.
+ The Download link points to:

About: + +

VTF Plug-In is a 32 bit/64 bit Paint.NET file format + plug-in for the .vtf file format. It is a simple plug-in that supports single-frame/multiple-frame, 3 + or 4 channel .vtf files in any format. It is designed for typical .vtf creation and viewing and does + not contain the advanced features found in VTFEdit. + Nonetheless, it can be a useful tool for creating simple .vtf files.

The plug-in is 32 bit because of a dependency on a 32 bit NVIDIA library. It won't + work on 64 bit Pain.Net installations.

I remember using the plugin successfully a few months ago but now when I try to save + my VTFs, PDN crashes... I use Vista 32 bit. Maybe a problem caused by a new version of PDN?

Hey, I'm trying to use paint.net for making TF2 skins, I know I used the GCFscape and + VTFEdit program properly to extract the skin I wanna change, yet when I open it up everything shows up + as a transparency. Is there a setting I need to switch paint.net to or is the transparency normal, and + how am I to change the colors when they aren't even the true colors. Please Advise shrug

Never mind what I said, I found a way around it being a transparency, for anyone + having trouble the way I did, just go into the VTFEdit program and copy the whole thing, then paste into + paint.net and it will not be transparent. you will probably end up saving it as a bmp or jpeg. But if + you have VTFEdit just convert it back into a VTF format.

VTF + Plug-In for Photoshop - NemPosted: May 6th, 2005 - 3:08:47 pm +
+
+
About: + +

VTF Plug-In is an Adobe Photoshop 6.0 and up file format plug-in for the .vtf file format. It + is a simple plug-in that supports single-frame/single-face, 3 or 4 channel .vtf files in any format. + It is designed for typical .vtf creation and viewing and does not contain the advanced features found + in VTFEdit. + Nonetheless, it can be a useful tool for creating simple .vtf files. The plug-in does not support 64 + bit versions of Photoshop.

No. Adobe charges money for their SDK (currently v7). It took me hours to find the + old v6 SDK on the web, which was their last free release. It only supports Photoshop 6 and + up.

You could copy and paste from Adobe to VTFEdit (easiest solution), the alpha channel is not + supported with this method however.

Edit: A few people have mentioned to me that it does work in + Paint Shop Pro. To install it, create a folder in the PlugIns folder called VTFLib and + place both the VTF.8bi and the VTFLib.dll files in it. If it works please let me know which version of + Paint Shop you have, I know it at least works in Paint Shop Pro 8.

The plug-in should work in PS CS (I've heard of many people using it and I personally + use it in PS CS2). Make sure you have all your files in the right place (see readme.txt); foreign + countries may have localized folder names and different PS installations can have different directory + structures.

The error you describer occurs when the .dll cannot be found, it should be in the + same folder as your Photoshop.exe. As a last resort you can try putting it in your system32 folder, + Windows will also look there.

I wrote a small cmake build system for the Linux port (who knows, maybe it works also + under other operating systems):
+ http://twoday.tuwien.ac.at/pub/files/hllib-cmake
+
+ Usage:
+ unzip hllib242.zip
+ unzip hllib-cmake.zip
+ mkdir HLLib-build
+ cd HLLib-build
+ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr ../HLLib
+ make -j2 && sudo make install
+ sudo ldconfig # <- don't know if this is really needed
+ mkdir HLExtract-build
+ cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr ../HLExtract
+ make -j2 && sudo make install
+
+ If you install HLLib somewhere else than /usr also pass -DCMAKE_MODULE_PATH=$PREFIX/cmake/modules to the + second cmake call.
+
+ This installs following files into your $CMAKE_INSTALL_PATH:
+ lib/libhllib.so
+ lib/libhllib.so.2.3.0
+ include/hllib/hl.h
+ bin/hlextract
+
+ Note: There are many warnings when compiling HLLib. Some of them seem to me potentially serious (using + uninitialized variables, crazy casts and such). Maybe someone should take a look at that. Maybe they + aren't really serious.

Thanks Panzi.

When I ran 'make -j2 && sudo make install' I got the + error:

CMake Error at cmake_install.cmake:56 (FILE):
file INSTALL cannot find + "/Users/acidking/HLLib/../lib/HLLib.h

So I tried to edit 'HLLib-build/cmake_install.cmake', + to correct the path:

HLLib/../lib/HLLib.h
to
HLLib/HLLib.h

It worked, + and then when I ran 'cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr ../HLExtract', I got this error:

CMake + Error: The source "/Users/acidking/HLExtract/CMakeLists.txt" does not match the source + "/Users/acidking/HLLib/CMakeLists.txt" used to generate cache. Re-run cmake with a different source + directory.
+
+ What could be the problem?

Hi.

I made a git mirror here and started fixing compile errors you get when + you compile with -Wall -Wextra -pedantic -Werror:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib

Summary + of my fixes so far:
lpOffsets[i] cannot be -1, did you want to compare to the maximum value (i.e. + (hlULongLong)-1)?:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/BSPFile.cpp#L111

uiLength + cannot be less than 0:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/Error.cpp#L142

iMode + might be used uninitialized:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/FileMapping.cpp#L152
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/FileStream.cpp#L102

there + is no long long type in standard C++ (I changed it to int64_t):
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/stdafx.h#L43

'SGAHeader' + was not declared in this scope:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/SGAFile.cpp#L304
Should + it be CSGASpecializedDirectory::SGAHeader or TSGAHeader?

standard C++ can't cast between data and + function pointers, but there is a trick how to do it anyway:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/HLLib.cpp#L432
+
+ Also I added "default: break;" to every switch statement that does not enumerate all enum values (or + else it won't compile with the given flags).
+
+ The flags also disallow unused parameters. I explicitly silenced those by adding "(void)param;" (creates + no extra binary code).
+
+
+ The error about SGAHeader is a bit concerning and kinda stops me from fixing more errors. What was meant + here?
+

+
+
+
7. panziModified: Mar 15th, 2014 - 4:51:34 am +

One more thing:

dereferencing type-punned pointer will break strict-aliasing + rules:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/VBSPFile.cpp#L444

Also + I think it's not endian-safe. So I do this instead:

+
Code:
+

#define HL_FOURCC_TO_UINT(FOURCC) (hlUInt)(FOURCC[0] | FOURCC[1] << 8 | + FOURCC[2] << 16 | FOURCC[3] << 24)

const hlChar *lpFourCC = + this->pHeader->lpLumps[uiID].lpFourCC;
hlAttributeSetUnsignedInteger(&Attribute, + this->lpItemAttributeNames[eAttribute], HL_FOURCC_TO_UINT(lpFourCC), hlTrue);
+
+

Hmm, I think I'm going to change all usages of strcpy, strcat, strncpy and strncat to + strlcpy + and strlcat (copying the BSD implementation of those and compiling it if the functions aren't + available). This should make the code simpler (where strncpy/strncat was used before) and more + safe (in any case). These functions ensure nil termination(!) and the size parameter is the size of the + buffer (including nil), not the number of characters to copy.
+
+ I also do a similar thing for sprintf => snprintf.
+

+
+
+
9. panziModified: Mar 15th, 2014 - 6:51:07 pm +
+
+
Also I see you use hlUInt (which is 32bit, even on a 64bit system) at a lot of places + even when you handle values that might need 64bits. E.g. st_size as used in HLLib::GetFileSize is + actually a signed 64bit value on 64bit Linux and also on 32bit Linux if you compile using + -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 (which you should).
+
+ I could change it to some hlSSize type that has the appropriate size on all platforms (hlULong would not + be fine on 32bit Linux plus -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64). Shall I? It would break binary (and I guess also + source) compatibility with existing Linux code using HLLib (I wouldn't change it for Windows because I + can't test it under Windows).

Is it correct, that when a file has no parent, then it's path won't get lpRootPath + prepended? See:
https://github.com/panzi/HLLib/blob/ba88548a1d3b0b32a89370e7e477eeb4ca245530/HLLib/NCFFile.cpp#L582 +

I added these static methods with which one can open any supported package where the + CPackage subtype is automatically determined by the data:

+
Code:
+

static CPackage *CPackage::AutoOpen(Streams::IStream &Stream, hlUInt + uiMode);
static CPackage *CPackage::AutoOpen(Mapping::CMapping &Mapping, hlUInt + uiMode);
static CPackage *CPackage::AutoOpen(const hlChar *lpFileName, hlUInt uiMode);
static + CPackage *CPackage::AutoOpen(hlVoid *lpData, hlUInt uiBufferSize, hlUInt uiMode);
static CPackage + *CPackage::AutoOpen(hlVoid *pUserData, hlUInt uiMode);

Don't know about the + name.

Ah I also added these static methods:

+
Code:
+

static CPackage *CPackage::Open(Streams::IStream &Stream, hlUInt uiMode, + HLPackageType ePackageType);
static CPackage *CPackage::Open(Mapping::CMapping &Mapping, hlUInt + uiMode, HLPackageType ePackageType);
static CPackage *CPackage::Open(const hlChar *lpFileName, + hlUInt uiMode, HLPackageType ePackageType);
static CPackage *CPackage::Open(hlVoid *lpData, hlUInt + uiBufferSize, hlUInt uiMode, HLPackageType ePackageType);
static CPackage *CPackage::Open(hlVoid + *pUserData, hlUInt uiMode, HLPackageType ePackageType);

I use one of them in hlfs, a fuse file + system that uses HLLib. :) +

Hi all,

Tried to build HLLib on my Ubuntu box, but gcc or g++ compiler thingy + or whatever... (just to give you an idea of how well I understand C and derivatives) complains about one + of the files> SGAFile.h

So I run the following from /opt/HLLibTools where extracted and I + get:

+
Code:
+

$ sudo make -C HLLib Makefile install
make: Entering directory + `/opt/HLLibTools/HLLib'
make: Nothing to be done for `Makefile'.
g++ -c -O2 -g -fpic + -funroll-loops -fvisibility=hidden -o Wrapper.o Wrapper.cpp
In file included from + Packages.h:17:0,
from Wrapper.cpp:16:
SGAFile.h:279:3: error: a class-key must be used when + declaring a friend
SGAFile.h:279:3: error: friend declaration does not name a class or + function
SGAFile.h:280:3: error: a class-key must be used when declaring a + friend
SGAFile.h:280:3: error: friend declaration does not name a class or + function
SGAFile.h:281:3: error: a class-key must be used when declaring a + friend
SGAFile.h:281:3: error: friend declaration does not name a class or + function
SGAFile.h:282:3: error: a class-key must be used when declaring a + friend
SGAFile.h:282:3: error: friend declaration does not name a class or function
make: *** + [Wrapper.o] Error 1
make: Leaving directory `/opt/HLLibTools/HLLib'
$

Some + reading suggests that while this will get by most C++ compilers, GCC or G++ or whatever will not allow + it and requires class to be declared, but if I add the line
Code:
+
friend class CSGADirectory*
for each line, I get even more and more errors + complaining about the lines above it.

Checked some other *File.h files for reference but none + seem to have any friends ;) pun!

I'm probably doing something wrong, but if someone could take a + look I would much appreciate it. Have included the culprits here:

+
Code:
+

typedef CSGADirectory<SGAHeader4, SGADirectoryHeader4, SGASection4, + SGAFolder4, SGAFile4> CSGADirectory4;
typedef CSGADirectory<SGAHeader4, SGADirectoryHeader5, + SGASection5, SGAFolder5, SGAFile4> CSGADirectory5;
typedef CSGADirectory<SGAHeader6, + SGADirectoryHeader5, SGASection5, SGAFolder5, SGAFile6> CSGADirectory6;
typedef + CSGADirectory<SGAHeader6, SGADirectoryHeader7, SGASection5, SGAFolder5, SGAFile7> + CSGADirectory7;

friend CSGADirectory4;
friend CSGADirectory5;
friend + CSGADirectory6;
friend CSGADirectory7;

+
+ cheers guys, I'm of to bed. +

@Snowie I had the same problem. Seems like some standard strictness. I simply pasted + the type to which the typedef refers into the friend declarations. This and more changes you can find + here: https://github.com/panzi/HLLib
+ My version compiles with very strict compiler flags without warnings (last time I checked). I hoped my + changes would be merged some day, but I didn't get an answer.

About: +

virtuAMP is an open source real time virtual guitar amplifier for your home computer. virtuAMP + provides an intuitive interface for customizing your sound through a virtual pedalboard, which behaves + as your existing guitar rig does, allowing you to place effect pedals, connect them using cables and + control their sound using their controls. Your guitar connects directly to virtuAMP through your sound + card's line in, making virtuAMP a good substitute for a practice amplifier.

We need some sort of conversion or special jack lead for this?
+ coz my standard guitar to amp lead wont go into my sound card (Durr :P)
+
+ I know my mate has this wierd thing you put on the end of your jack to turn it into a 2.5/3.5mm jack + instead which would make it fit, but i've no idea where to buy one, how'd you plug your guitar in + nem?

The latency is ultimately determined by the speed of your computer and the quality of + your audio card. In order to reduce the latency, you may try playing around with the settings in the + Audio menu. Specifically, try increasing the Buffer Denominator, this is one over the + target latency in seconds. You may also be able to achieve a higher denominator by changing your + Driver.

Hi Nem,
+
+ love your virtuAMP. I am working on a program similar to yours. I am using ASIO audio drivers for even + lower latency than in virtuAMP. So my question is what literature did you use to write a functions like + reverb, distortion, flanger...? Is there some site with math formulas what to use?

Harmony + Central has some good articles explaining various common effects. Other than that, I just read up + on how each effect is typically implemented (in hardware) and tried to replicate it.
+
+ The source code for virtuAMP is also available, you may want to look at it.

If you need a command line program to extract .wad files, for the time being you + can use HLExtract (the example application that comes with HLLib). + It works more less the same way as wad2bmp. Example usage:
+
+ HLExtract.exe -p "C:\MyWad.wad" -e "root"

About: - -

HLLib is a package library for Half-Life that abstracts several package formats and provides a simple - interface for all of them. HLLib is written in native C++ but exposes both a C and C++ interface which - can be used in any C or C++ application (additional languages may also use the library with standard C - imports). HLLib works natively in both Windows (x86 and x64) and Linux. BSP, GCF, NCF, PAK, VPK, WAD, - XZP and uncompressed ZIP package formats are supported.

- -

HLLib is an open source library licensed under the LGPL. It comes with the source code and binaries - necessary to use it. An example application called HLExtract, which is licensed under the GPL, is also - included. HLExtract is a command line utility written in C that can load all HLLib supported packages - and extract multiple items from them while maintaining their directory structure. Also included is a - C# HLExtract port called HLExtract.Net.

- - Download: - - - - GridMount: - -

A MacFUSE - file system handler called GridMount - is available for those looking to run HLLib on a Mac.

- - Java Wrapper: - -

A Java wrapper is available for those looking to use HLLib in Java. It can be found on SourceForge. -

-
About: -

VTFLib v1.3.2 - VTFLib is available in a two flavours. The Source Code Archive contains the - source code, library and prebuilt binaries for VTFLib, VTFEdit and VTFCmd. Download this if you want - to modify the library or example applications (or just see how it all works). The Binary - Archive contains library and prebuilt binaries for VTFLib, VTFEdit and VTFCmd. Download this if - you just want to develop with VTFLib (or want access to all the binaries).

- -

VTFLib also uses nvDXT, - and VTFEdit and VTFCmd also use DevIL 1.7.8. In - order to compile, you will need to download those libraries and add their paths to Visual Studio.

VTFEdit is written in Visual Studio .NET 2003 (.NET v1.1), not Visual Studio .NET - 2005 (.NET v2.0). The two versions have a completly different syntax for C++ code and are not - compatible. You can compile VTFEdit in Visual Studio .NET 2005, however, if you change the - Common Language Runtime Support (general options) to /clr:oldSyntax.
-
- I'll likely convert the project to 2005 in the future, but it is too much of a pain and I have too many - other projects to do so at the moment.

Hello! Orangebox introduced version 7.4 of VTF, it says in the notes its bitwise - compatible with 7.3, however vtflib checks the version and refuses to work with 7.4.

I wrote the linked article so I'm aware of this. I have updated versions of my tools - that support v7.4, but I lost the source code for the PS VTF Plug-In (I'll have to rewrite part of it) - which is why nothing has been released as of yet.

I have a question for you Nem. I posted in the forum as well and just to be double - sure I thought I should post here too.
-
- Anyways I am designing a Scripter for CS:Source, and I was wondering if you could point me into the - right direction or at least provide some kind of code that will teach me how to use your library in a C# - project. If it helps these are the things that I would like to do.
-
- A. Allow the user to view file info
- - File Size
- - Flags(Like the ones in your program: VTFEdit
- - Dimensions(Width x Height)
- - Version
- - File Format
- - Frames
-
- B. Allow the user to pre-view a selected vtf/spray file in a picturebox.
-
- Again any and all help is greatly appreciated I do know about "Dllimport" with C# but I have yet to work - with it. So if you could either respond here or at the forums I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm, this is interesting. My build on VC2010 is breaking... -

Guessing - that it was because dxtlib was built last for VC2010, I decided to try to dig up some source codes to - build a lib for VC2010, but all I found was code in tools/src, but it seemed to build the library I - needed (unless I'm wrong, which I could be). But it yielded this error:

Error 1 error LNK2019: - unresolved external symbol "enum NV_ERROR_CODE __cdecl nvDDS::nvDXTcompress(unsigned char const - *,unsigned int,unsigned int,unsigned int,enum nvPixelOrder,class nvCompressionOptions *,enum - NV_ERROR_CODE (__cdecl*)(void const *,unsigned int,struct MIPMapData const *,void *),struct tagRECT - const *)" - (?nvDXTcompress@nvDDS@@YA?AW4NV_ERROR_CODE@@PBEIIIW4nvPixelOrder@@PAVnvCompressionOptions@@P6A?AW42@PBXIPBUMIPMapData@@PAX@ZPBUtagRECT@@@Z) - referenced in function "unsigned char __cdecl nvDXTCompressWrapper(unsigned char *,unsigned - int,unsigned int,class nvCompressionOptions *,enum NV_ERROR_CODE (__cdecl*)(void const *,unsigned - int,struct MIPMapData const *,void *))" - (?nvDXTCompressWrapper@@YAEPAEIIPAVnvCompressionOptions@@P6A?AW4NV_ERROR_CODE@@PBXIPBUMIPMapData@@PAX@Z@Z) - C:\Users\Kevin\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Resources\vtflib130\sln\vs8\VTFLib\VTFFile.obj
-
- I am wondering if this is because DDS_Utilities is now version 8.31.1127.1645? Something is getting - skewed. Anyway, I don't expect you to know the answer for fix anything, just thinking out loud - mostly.
-
- I guess I can try it out on VS2008 tomorrow. But I was just wondering about this since this is my first - go with dealing with vtflib's source. Since I don't really need the DDS stuff I might just cut out all - of the dxtlib stuff.
-
- By the by, long time lurker big time fan of your tools Nem! Thanks for making them!

The library is built using Visual Studio 2005 because the dependent nvDXTLib only - provides static libraries built for 2003 and 2005. There is a newer version of nvDXTLib, but I don't use - it because they removed features that I was using and completely changed the API.

nvDXTLib is - only necessary for creating .vtf images. If you just want to be able to read .vtf images, you can - rebuild the library with USE_NVDXT=0 defined.

Another option is to dynamically import the C - version of the API.

If you don't have nxDXTLib installed you will have to download - it and update your VC++ Directories to point to it.

Yeah, I did download/install it - from that page, but the build they have is different than the version required in vtflib (the legacy - page you link to only has build 8.31.1127.1645 available for download). I wish they had some sort of - previous releases list.

That said, I _do_ only need the library for reading .vtf files, so maybe - I will just build it without NVDXT. Thanks for the tip! That will probably save more time than - dynamically importing the C version of the API.

FYI, just an update.
- The Download link points to:
-
- http://developer.download.nvidia.com/tools/texturetools/DDS_Utilities_8.31.1127.1645.exe
-
- But if you just change the filename to the build mentioned in your comments in VTFFile.cpp - (8.31.0225.1745), it's still on the server for download. Here's the URL:
-
- http://developer.download.nvidia.com/tools/texturetools/DDS_Utilities_8.31.0225.1745.exe
-
- Might be helpful. -
